Yesterday was a dark day not just for Twitter, which continues to face outages due to strong DDOS attacks but also for Orbit Pulse as our web-host was down and faced outages as well. But as you’d notice, we’ve created a new theme for Orbit Pulse to allow for better navigation and readability.

And with that, there’s gonna be a slew of update posts today. So stay tuned!

Windows 7 In Action

Microsoft has rolled-out the final version of Windows 7, the “release to manufacturing” (RTM) build to Technet and MSDN subscribers. The English language version will be available from today and other languages will be available on October 1.

As Microsoft announced last week, the beta testers who participated in the invitation-only Technical beta will be rewarded with a free copy of Windows 7 Ultimate, which they can download from Connect, as can Software and Hardware vendors.

Companies with software assurance plans have to wait till tomorrow, and the rest of the public have to wait till October 22nd.

If you can’t wait, you can try the free release candidate available on the Microsoft website and if you are a Technet beta-tester, get the download instructions for Windows 7 Ultimate RTM here.

NVIDIA Launches OptiX Engine. Real-time Ray Tracing Possible

Gamers and tech-enthusiast’s darling NVIDIA has launched a new engine for developers named OptiX. For the first time, its possible to have interactive real-time and ray-traced graphics on a normal desktop PC.

For the uninitiated, games today use raster graphics based engines for displaying the breathtaking visuals as seen in Crysis, Gran Turismo 5 and Microsoft’s own Forza Motorsport 3. Rather than recreating the visuals onscreen, it’s more like faking it. Ray-tracing instead of faking it, mimics how a single ray or light works in real and uses that to create uber-realistic lighting and reflection.

Ray Tracing Example

Ray Tracing Example

Well, agreed, there isn’t much Ray-tracing action to really trace and talk about as of now, but ray-tracing is here and it’s getting bigger. Some obvious advantages it has are:

  1. Making game development easier. Since less code needs to go in and the ray-tracing engine does most of the hard-work.
  2. Game designers have more time to spend incorporating detailed textures, adding on to the realism.
  3. Ray-tracing is, wait for it, scalable! So using 2 processors/cores would give you a boost of 2X. Or nearly 16x for 16 cores! I’m not giving you ideal figures here, these have been achieved.

While for the time being, this technology is limited to the Quadro series. A mostly unimpressive experiment was carried out a few years ago, with a modified Quake 4 engine which used ray-tracing but the textures and technology of that era is a real let-down when you see games of today. So the real implications can only be noticed only when a major gaming studio like Crytek (the studio behind FarCry, Crysis and Crysis Warhead)  incorporate ray-tracing into their game engines for a demo.

Portable Media Player War Is Heating Up

ZuneHD

ZuneHD

Apple may have beaten the others to the customers with its iPod touch, but the competition is just getting started.
Microsoft’s Zune HD, which is expected to hit stores this fall, will allow you to play HD video, access HD Radio. With a 3.3inch OLED touch screen, it is powered by the new NVIDIA Tegra processor. And like the iPod touch, it has an internet browser and Wifi. The newly released snaps of this smart device look absolutely gorgeous. The price is not yet announced but it is speculated to be cheaper than an iPod Touch.

Creative is coming up with the Zii egg, developed in ZiiLabs. This has a rich list of goodies like a 3.5 inch LCD screen, HD viewing and output upto 1080p, bluetooth, microphone, accerameter, dual-camera, text-to-speech and 3D graphics. But the most exciting part is that this device will be powered by Android. Which means the users can download the growing number of Android apps and use them on this sleek media player. The 32GB, $400 Zii egg is already available for developers.

So, if you are planning to buy a new portable media player in the near future, what would you opt for?

Nokia N97 Mini

I stumbled upon http://mobile-review.com/articles/2009/birulki-27.shtml a couple of minutes ago. The rumors are probably true: Nokia is launching a mini version of Nokia n97.

Major differences:

  • 8GB of memory instead of 32GB
  • Smaller screen, similar to the 5530 XM
  • The keyboard doesn’t have a D-Pad but has arrow keys.
  • $100 lesser than the N97

Head over to http://mobile-review.com/articles/2009/birulki-27.shtml to read the complete review and sneak a glance at the new N97 mini. If you can’t understand Russian, here is the translation from Google Translate: http://bit.ly/CIAFD
